Carrier loss run guide

USLI Loss Run Request, Step by Step

To get a USLI loss run, the agent who placed the policy can usually request it through the USLI agent portal. A new broker sends a written request with the insured's signed letter of authority, policy numbers and periods to the loss run channel USLI publishes. The insured can request their own too. Allow about 10 business days.

How to request a USLI loss run

Five steps that work for the agent of record, a new broker with a letter of authority or the insured.

  1. 1

    Collect policy details

Get the declarations pages for each USLI policy from the insured: named insured, FEIN, policy numbers and policy periods for the last five years.

  2. 2

Get a signed letter of authority

Have an officer of the insured sign a letter of authority that names your agency and lets USLI release loss history to you.

  3. 3

    Send to the right channel

If you placed the policy, request the loss run through the USLI agent portal. As a new broker, send the signed letter of authority to the loss run channel published on the USLI website.

  4. 4

    Follow up on a schedule

Follow up on day 3, day 7 and day 14 if no reply arrives, and confirm the current loss run channel with the carrier if the request is not acknowledged.

  5. 5

    Check the reply

Confirm every policy period is present, totals add up and the valuation date is within 90 days before you send the loss run to market.

Lines USLI commonly writes

  • Small commercial package
  • General liability
  • Professional liability
  • Property
  • Nonprofit and specialty classes

Typical request channels

  • Agent portal for appointed retail agents
  • Wholesale broker of record, where used
  • Loss run or service channel, as published on the carrier website
  • Written request with a signed letter of authority

Channels change. Confirm the current loss run channel with USLI before you send.

The same process applies to every carrier. Our guide on how to request loss runs covers the full workflow, and if you are new to the document itself, start with what a loss run report is.

What to include in a USLI loss run request

A complete request is the fastest request. Missing policy numbers or an unsigned authorization are the usual reasons a carrier does not reply.

  • Named insured exactly as shown on the USLI policy, plus any additional named insureds
  • FEIN of the insured
  • Every policy number and policy period, including prior and cancelled terms
  • Number of years requested, usually five
  • Lines of coverage you need (for example small commercial package)
  • Letter of authority signed by the insured
  • Where to send the loss run: your email address or a secure upload link
  • Request for a current valuation date with paid, reserved and incurred amounts

Use a ready request letter

Our loss run request letter has every field above, with a letter of authority block for the insured to sign. For workers comp history, see workers comp loss runs for the medical and indemnity detail markets expect.

The insured can usually request their own USLI loss runs too, which helps when a carrier is slow to answer a broker.

How LossRunReports sends the USLI request

One request center for every carrier. The signed letter of authority goes out with the request, and follow-ups run on day 3, 7 and 14 until the loss run arrives.

Replies land on a dedicated inbound address or a secure upload link. PDF, scanned, XLSX and CSV loss runs are read into one claims schema, totals are reconciled, and gaps, duplicates and valuations older than 90 days are flagged. Tips for USLI loss runs

USLI writes many small and hard to place classes. Include the class of business so the reply matches the right policy.

Professional liability policies are usually claims made. Ask for reported claims and incidents.

Short term and event policies still count. List every policy number the insured held.

USLI loss run questions

Can a retail agent who did not place the USLI policy request loss runs?

Yes, with a letter of authority signed by the named insured.

Is USLI loss history included in other Berkshire Hathaway loss runs?

No, request USLI history from USLI. Each Berkshire Hathaway company handles its own loss runs.

What if the USLI policy was a short term event policy?

List it with its dates. A loss run for a short term is requested the same way as an annual policy.
